Risk Assessment
Overview
Risk assessment is at the heart of the legislation and is the key to achieving success in managing health and safety. The Regulations require that a "suitable and sufficient" risk assessment be carried out BEFORE work is started. If you have not fulfilled this most basic of requirements you are in breach of the law and may face enforcement action or even be prosecuted. Furthermore, your staff have the right to a safe working environment where risks are managed and adequately controlled.
Risk assessment is the systematic examination of premises and activities, processes, people tasks and machines to identify hazards and to evaluate existing controls. A "suitable and sufficient" risk assessment will take all of the existing control measures into consideration and will make recommendations for changes and/or additional measures to reduce the risk to an acceptable level.
